Mirrors
Wizard Power has developed a highly efficient and robust mirror panel technology. The mirror panels are made from glass mirrors supported on a rigid and strong sandwich panel. The combination of thin glass (~1 mm), low iron content and an optimised silver back surface in the mirrors ensures very high reflectivity (>93%), combined with the scratch resistance and durability that only glass mirrors bring.
The mirrors are shaped in a custom-developed process to a high degree of accuracy to maximise the concentration of light at the focus of a dish, and hence minimise the optical and thermal losses from the receiver.
Wizard Power has pursued a careful development program in the area of mirror panels, learning from in-field experience, and extensive testing, with a focus on thoroughness and attention to detail. Mirror panels have been designed to last 25 years in the field, with no maintenance apart from cleaning. This mirror panel technology offers the best mix of performance and durability of any solar mirror technology currently available.
The mirror technology was developed to produce 3D curved mirror panels for the Big Dish technology, but mirror panels for troughs, heliostats, or other solar or architectural applications are possible using the Wizard Power technology.
Mirror panels produced for Big Dish applications have a spherical curvature with radius approximately 30 m, and are sized at approximately 1.2 m x 1.2 m. When the 380 mirror panels on each Big Dish are attached to the paraboloidal Big Dish structure the combined effect provides a highly accurate 2000+ sun concentration ratio from the approximately 500 m2 aperture area.
Wizard Power has patents pending covering the mirror panel design and manufacturing techniques.
